 Oxoid™ Blood Agar Base 500g is a high-quality, non-selective general-purpose medium, ideal for cultivating a wide range of bacterial species. It can be enriched with blood or serum to support the growth of fastidious organisms and is commonly used in clinical, diagnostic, and research laboratories.

Intended Use

Recommended for the cultivation and differentiation of hemolytic bacteria and general bacterial culture. When enriched with defibrinated blood, it supports the growth of fastidious microorganisms such as Streptococcus species and Haemophilus haemolyticus.

Preparation Instructions

1. Suspend 40g of Blood Agar Base in 1 litre of distilled water.

2. Bring to a boil, ensuring complete dissolution.

3. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.

4. To prepare blood agar plates, cool the base to 50°C, add 7% defibrinated horse blood, mix gently, and pour into sterile Petri dishes.

Storage Conditions

• Dehydrated medium: Store at 10–30°C; use before the expiry date on the label.

• Prepared plates: Store at 2–8°C.

Precautions

• Hemolytic reactions may vary depending on the type of blood used and incubation conditions (aerobic, capnophilic, or anaerobic).

• When horse blood is used, Haemophilus haemolyticus may produce beta-hemolysis, mimicking Streptococcus pyogenes.
